Arriving here in Germany we got on some Facebook groups to find local people. In the spouses of active duty personnel we put out a post to announce our arrival. With a quick introduction to us we said once we were up to date we’d be scheduling sessions. Angela contacted us and she said that her husband’s unit was being deployed. She wanted 160th FST deployment photography for their casing ceremony. There were a few families that wanted photos and some that didn’t.

We respected those who didn’t want photos of this moment. It’s an intimate and sad moment that their significant other is leaving for several months. For those who did want photos we took some staged photos in their assembly area. One by one the families would come out and pose together in front of their unit’s vehicles. To start, we worked with Angela and her family at the Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

MILITARY DEPLOYMENT PHOTOGRAPHY

The Angeles family brought American flags to do pictures with. As the morning went on other families came back and we took pictures. Some families had several children, some were growing and expecting. There were children young and old and all were there to support their family. Family after family got photos done with me until it was time to gather and begin the ceremonial portion.

After they got in formation each person received USO bags and were then able to say one last goodbye to their families. Without previous conversation and consent we were unable to photograph all the families. We stuck to photographing candid shots of the Angeles family as the tears came and they said their goodbyes.

CASING CEREMONY PHOTOS

It was an emotional morning for all and even without knowing any of these families beforehand I empathized with the send off. I know the families are excited for their return and I’m excited to be there when the 160th FST returns back to their families.
